If you are (still) asking: “Should I buy organic?” …please watch my l’il experiment!

I was so excited to test my new gadget – something called Green Test, developed by a team in Hong Kong – which measures the level of nitrates in our produce. The simple test I did with a few things from my fridge revealed shocking results!

You should watch this…and leave me your comment below.

Let this New Year mean something…

Standard

It’s now mid-February (and no, I can’t believe it either) and truth be told, I am already a bit exhausted from the festivities which started pre-Christmas (yes, these are happy events but they can be exhausting and you know it), and the attempts at cranking the engines on the work front now that I have clearer goals to shoot for.

However, in this moment of reflection, I realise much of the fatigue I am feeling is largely sadness… and about wishing the people I care about were not suffering. It’s uncanny and not funny at all, that in the recent weeks, four people I know well had been diagnosed with, or died because of, major and chronic illnesses. Sadly, this is four more on top of the others who are already ill from months past…

A relative has full blown Stage 4 cancer, my oldest friend from childhood has just been told she is in the early stages of breast cancer, another relative overseas was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy two days ago, and I found out an ex-colleague is grieving from her husband’s sudden passing from a massive heart attack. No goodbyes were said of course, in this case, so you can well imagine the shock to the family.

illness and spiritual journey

I apologise if this post is a bit of a downer. For me, confronting realities and taking action while we can, making preventive decisions – and most certainly while we are ‘well’ is what it’s all about!

The reality is that today’s lifestyle of the ‘Wired and Tired’, ‘Overfed and Undernourished’ and ‘Stressed and Scared’ have wreaked havoc with our health and have distracted us from what’s important.

Most people take good health for granted, and actually think that if I am not ‘sick’, I am OK. The absence of disease doesn’t mean that you are healthy and living at your best. Adam Levine sang it best in his song Nothing Lasts Forever. There’s this line that has stuck in my head since I first heard it which applies to many things in life, and is certainly relevant when we think about our wellness: “… just because we haven’t hit the ground, doesn’t mean we’re still falling”.

Remember, great health is not something you wish for, it’s something you work for.

May this new year give you fresh impetus to work on your most Luxuriously Healthy Life. Your best health cannot wait.

Eat not just to fill…but to fuel!

This is one of the easy-to-remember sayings I hope will stay with you for a long time…so you see chances everyday, throughout the day to do right by your body. It is trying its best to do right by you – striving for balance, repair and strength – for  you.

When you view what's on your plate with a new lens...you assert the choice to take care of yourself!

I read this quote in one of the books I was browsing at my chiropractor’s office the other day…yes, please see a chiro if you haven’t already…three weeks and I feel like a new woman 🙂 Anyway, I digress. This quote from Thomas Edison reinforced my own view about how a true ‘doctor’ helps someone heal himself/herself, and if we take care of our frame (structure – the spine is most definitely included!), our diet and I guess I would add our worldview, then we can truly help ourselves in the pursuit of a healthy body and mind!

Feeling so blessed 🙂

“Regular exercise, particularly resistance training and other weight-bearing forms of exercise, produces the same beneficial changes in the body as the human growth hormone – increased muscle mass, decreased body fat and stronger bones.”

Let GM salmon swim through red tape…REALLY?

There are not many news articles in my local papers that solicit as visceral a reaction as this one did from me recently. The title leapt at me – this nearly full-page, basically one-sided argument (the link here takes you to the article reproduced on the AsiaOne site) to suggest that we should allow genetically engineered salmon into our food supply and that it’s ‘safe’. Really? On which planet?

Upon reading the entire piece on Feb 24th, I felt rather enraged and sat down to write my response to this. I emailed it straightaway that morning (hey, I gave up my usual Sunday morning run for this!), hoping that if I met the 12noon deadline, it may get published the next day. Alas, not. New budget news were announced last week…which got everyone worried about cost of cars and wage credits. So, I have been biding my time since then (a 5-day moratorium is what the Straits Times asked for before I can publish this anywhere else).

So here it is, my Response to the Sunday Times about this issue.  This is the full, unedited version. And you know what’s worrying? When I googled this morning to find a link I could use on this post about the original article, there were already about 6 other news and health websites which have regurgitated this article for their readers!

Don’t think any fish would wish to be genetically altered…

(Sorry, I don’t have any images of salmon in my personal library – so here’s one of some happy koi
from the pond where I live…it will have to do for now!)

The FDA was expected to rule on this issue last week but I have not been able to find any news updates about it yet, so maybe there’s been a delay. Do comment and let me know if you stumble upon an update about this. I will continue tracking.

I want to know where my food comes from, don’t you? We need to keep asking and pushing for transparency from the authorities, and be the consumer who cares!

Just Say NO to GMO!

This video with a message is awesome… Was doing my research and reading today, and stumbled upon the Heath Ranger aka Mike Adams. Genetically-modified foods are the new conspiracy in our food industry. Arm yourself with information and let’s fight back! I am intrigued that here’s someone using his talent to songs music about important health issues – I really admire that!

A Salad State of Mind

Standard

Salad3I recently attended a Sensational Salads class which finally gave me the kick I needed to buy a VitaMix blender and a food dehydrator. The salads taught by Viv Sutanto from the Living Food Institute were great! Inspired me to start elevating my own salad creations beyond the three salad recipes I have which have proven popular amongst friends and family. I am also receiving some rather punchy Raw Food messages from David Wolfe as part of  the Health Coach program I am currently attending…so will definitely continue eating as much raw as I can 🙂
